SUMMARY:Maggie Hazen - Fraught Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:  \nPrevious Refuge Gallery Exhibits \nThe Refuge Gallery serves as a venue for exhibitions of artistic work relating to humanitarian and social justice issues. Using art as a means to illuminate\, educate and provoke\, the Refuge Gallery seeks to bring the Fordham community closer to the injustices experienced by our fellow global citizens. \nOur vision is to create a stimulating environment encouraging of cultural and artistic inquiry through a social justice lens for our students\, neighbors\, artists\, and the humanitarian sector — not only at the Institute but at Fordham University as a whole. \nIntroduction and about Refuge Gallery\nThe Refuge Gallery is an extension of the work at the IIHA. To learn more about the Refuge Gallery\, group tours\, or general inquiry email vstracquadan@fordham.edu. Private self-guided tours are available at our Refuge Gallery address. \nArtist Introduction\nMaggie Hazen\nMaggie Hazen is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist from Los Angeles and is also the Co-founder and Director of the Juvenile Justice Digital Arts Project. Her work explores themes of resistance in a cinematically real world of violence through a combination of moving image\, sculpture and performance.  She has exhibited\, screened\, and performed works at Pulse Miami Beach as part of Pulse Play\, The Museum of Tolerance\, The Granoff Center\, CICA Museum\, Microscope Gallery\, and The Boston Young Contemporaries. She holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and is currently a professor at Bard College in Studio Arts. \nPlease check back for upcoming events related to this exhibit. \nRead more about Maggie Hazen below \nMaggie Hazen website \nPioneer Works \nInstagram \nAbout the Columbia Collective\nTHE COLUMBIA COLLECTIVE is a coalition of emerging female and trans artists—Jay\, Juste-A\, Marilynn\, Marshmallow\, Rory Rei\, Tiana\, and Toni—who are currently or formerly incarcerated. Founded by artist Maggie Hazen in 2019\, the collective began inside a maximum-security juvenile facility and now creates across carceral boundaries\, crafting a shared vision beyond confinement. Through practices of healing and radical imagination\, the group works to reimagine and transform the prison system from the inside out. \nFrom 2019 to 2021\, the group met weekly for arts instruction based on a graduate-school MFA model\, in which artists cultivate their own visions and projects\, outside of an established curriculum with grades and assignments. For the past five years\, Hazen has cultivated artist communities in other NY state prison facilities\, actively working with abolition-minded community partners to connect the Collective to resources and transitional support post-incarceration through fundraising\, storytelling\, and mentorship.  \nSince the formation of the Columbia Collective\, the group has exhibited and collaborated with Pioneer Works\, Red Hook\, NY; Siena College\, NY; Boarder Patrol\, Bakersfield\, CA; Shandaken Projects\, NY; Moxi Childrens Museum\, Santa Barbara\, CA; The Athens Cultural Center\, Catskill\, NY; and Girls Inc.\, Santa Barbara\, CA. \nVisit Us\nThe Refuge Gallery is open to all for viewing Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm or by appointment. SUMMARY:Aid Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Please read! Aid Yoga is an all-levels yoga class designed to teach students about stretching and relaxation poses and how to use these skills on and off the mat. Yoga is a physical practice that goes beyond teaching students how to move according to their comfort zones. This kind of workout teaches students how to regain control of their breathing\, how to trust themselves\, how to create a safe space\, and how to cope with a stressful event. The purpose of hosting Aid Yoga© at the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) is two fold: to provide a free\, community event that benefits the mind and body of the students while also giving them tools to take with them into the humanitarian field or in life. The class structure will build onto itself and have a theme so that the more classes a student joins\, the more they will advance\, learn\, and improve their practice. No class will be the same. Thank you for your interest\, and I look forward to seeing you in class! \nDate and time: Thursday\, October 16th\, 2025 5:15 pm – 6:15 pm \nLocation: IIHA Refuge Gallery is located on the second floor in Canisius Hall. 2546 Belmont Ave\, Bronx\, NY 10458 \nMaximum capacity: Ten (10) people \nAttention! Please only register if you intend to come. We base our food order and measure space off of your registration. Thank you! \nPlease bring: Water bottle\, notepad and pen\, and appropriate work-out clothing. \nYoga mats are available for borrowing. \nInstructor: Lily Egan\, Communications Officer\, IIHA

Self-guided tours are available at our Refuge Gallery address.  \n \n \n \n \nArtist Introductions \nChildren Seeking Asylum\nThe youngest asylum seekers at our southern border have something to say about immigration policies that have left them homeless in one of the most dangerous cities in the world.  When the children artists painted their migrant experiences in 2019 for this exhibit\, they were stranded in Ciudad Juárez\, a city notorious for its  high murder rate\, cartel violence\, disappeared women\, and kidnapping and extortion of migrants. \nIn 2018\, to curb the high numbers of people seeking asylum at the northern Mexican border the Trump administration initiated the Migrant Protection Protocols. This policy remained in place under the Biden administration until 2021 and essentially shut down the U.S. asylum process.  In its wake\, the Biden administration announced even tougher asylum policies that consequently increased the numbers of migrants stranded in Mexican border cities.  They can’t go home and they can’t move forward.  Among these travelers are thousands of youngsters\, often traveling alone. \nThe Trump administration\, 2025\, has revived these protocols as part of his border crackdown and children\, some  unaccompanied\, and some with their families\, are again stuck in limbo on the southern side of the US/Mexico border\, waiting.  \nThe young artists who created the exhibit Painting the Border; A Child’s Voice answered  one question with their brush strokes: What do you think about the border? ¿Qué opinas de la frontera?  The images reveal a longing for home\, journeying\,  hopefulness\,  and  border realities. \nThe paintings express experiences shared by hundreds of thousands of people affected by a worldwide human displacement crisis\, forced to migrate by war\, violence\, climate change\, abject poverty\, and hope for a better life.   \nThe exhibit is a collaborative effort initiated by Skidmore Senior Teaching Professor Diana Barnes.  It was organized in Juárez by Organization for world Peace representative and children’s author Lucero de Alba\, NGO volunteers from Seguimos Adelante\, and El Paso artist Cimi Alvarado. \nPainting the Border; A Child’s Voice\, will hang in the Refuge Gallery through April 2026.  An opening reception by the Refuge Gallery and Diana Barnes will be held on February 23\, 2026 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  \nOpening Reception\nGuests will leave having viewed and engaged with the children’s paintings and narratives\, and with added context from Professor Diana Barnes’s remarks on how the exhibit came together\, gaining a clearer understanding of how border policies have shaped the lived experiences of children (artists) stranded in Ciudad Juárez. Please register here on Constant Contact for the opening reception on February 23 at 6 p.m.  \nVisit Us\nThe Refuge Gallery is open to all for viewing Monday – Thursday 10 am-4pm or by appointment. SUMMARY:Yoga At The IIHA
\nDate and time: Wednesday\, February 18th\, 2026\, 5:15 pm – 6:15 pm \nLocation: The IIHA Refuge Gallery is on the second floor of Canisius Hall.
